Is it just me or do photos of royalty exude creepiness? There’s something otherworldly about them, almost waxwork-like, their fixed stares gazing into a predestined future, eyes glazed and smiles glued on. Whilst this postcard is nowhere near as disturbing as their Swedish counterparts (as least this crew are looking at the camera) I can’t help but find it eerie. The children, at least, appear natural, their training in vapidity clearly still underway.

Maybe I’m being harsh. They all look lovely in their frocks, King Willem-Alexander included. The composition doesn’t help with the kookiness though; the requirement to get the monarch’s furry train into the picture has resulted in a bit of squishing over on Queen Beatrix’ side, and it’s a slightly unconventionally-shaped postcard that won’t fit into my album. On the plus side, for a geek who likes detail, it’s one of the rare occasions where the person on the postcard also appears on the stamp.
