This impressive sculpture is the monolith, found in Frogner Park in Oslo and one of many public works of art by Gustav Vigeland. The works are known as the Vigeland Installation and were completed by the artist between 1920 and 1943. Vigeland’s work often featured the naked human form, no more so than in this formidable work, a tower of writhing bodies standing phallus-like amid smaller subjects. Of his other works, perhaps the most notable is the design for the Nobel Peace Prize.
